We live in some pretty exciting times, technologically speaking. I haven’t picked up a newspaper in years. I don’t watch the news on TV. I get almost 100% of my news and information through social media.

Twitter allows me to follow the news and, almost more importantly, to follow the people following the news. For example, I know that I can trust people like Robert Scoble and Chris Pirillo to stay on top of technology. I know people like Chris Brogan, Jim Kurkal and Gary Vaynerchuk are going to show me what’s new in social media. For better or worse, I trust them.

On YouTube I can catch any TV “moments” I may have missed. Jennifer Lopez fell on stage? Let me YouTube that. They did a remake We Are The World? Cool. I’ll watch it online. The only thing I use my TV for these days is to DVR The Office and a couple other shows, or to watch my Netflix movies.

Then there’s LinkedIn. I probably use this the least of all social media sites. Why is that? Because it’s a bit too serious and boring at times. Besides, I’m friend with a lot of the same people on Facebook, and I can just as easily follow what they are doing (including changing jobs) and interact with them easier on FB.

However, LinkedIn is still the BEST way to maintain an online Rolodex of all the people I’ve worked with, and all the people I’m networking with. It’s also the best place to house an online resume complete with references that are easy to validate. I also ometimes use the Q&A section, groups, and some of the other features.

Email isn’t really what I’d call “social media” per se, but it is my preferred digital in-basket. I use it to capture blogs, Tweets, articles, videos, and pretty much anything I want to take a closer look at when I get have more time or am sitting in front of my computer.

It’s also my permanent archive of a vast amount of information. Thanks to Google, Gmail has the best search in the world, so I can usually find anything I want in less than 30 seconds, and usually less than 5. I’m not joking. I can find ANYTHING, going back years. Even work-related stuff because I either used Gmail or forwarded a copy of my work email in order to keep things easily “searchable.”

Outlook 2007 definitely improved it’s search, but often the search index gets out of sync and you have to reindex. That’s scary after you’ve switched over to the Google method of taggging and using one big Archive folder. I found myself frequently jumping over to Gmail to find something work related because Outlook was having a “bad day.”

Lastly, there is Facebook. Oh, Facebook, how I love thee. And hate thee too. I’ve never been more social in my life. I know more about some of the people I went to high school with than I do about some of my closest friends–only because my friends are not on Facebook (yet). I follow some of my favorite brands, I am meeting new people and extended family members, and I can share a little bit about myself as well.

If I feel like sharing a little more, I can write a blog post like this one. On my iPhone. In bed. Yep, that’s where I am at this exact moment. Later I might be at Momoya Sushi, or an Apple store. I’ll let you know via FourSquare, which is shaping up to be the next Twitter, especially when more businesses get on board and start giving away instant discounts (20% off anything in the store) and free stuff (a round of drinks, appetizers, gambling chips) whenever you “check in.”

The inspiration for this blog post was actually something I saw while waiting outside the women’s restroom at the mall. I jumped onto Facebook and read a post from President Obama about the recent health care and education reform he had just signed into effect. OK, so it probably wasn’t the “actual” President, but someone in his administration. The bottom line is they are making excellent use of the social media tools that are available. This screenshot from my iPhone pretty much says it all:

OK, so it’s not an AMAZING feat of strength, but it has been a goal of mine for some time. It started about a year ago when I first noticed the domain www.tonypinto.com was available. I was lucky enough to buy it for less than $10 bucks!

Then I created this Wordpress blog, started Tweeting as @tpinto3 (had @tonypinto at one point, but lost it), and began to comment on other blogs, with links back to my site. I also created a Google profile that links all of my social media, including Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare.

The journey continues, but I’m just glad now that whenever somebody types “Tony Pinto” into Google, they find me right up at the top.

Can you say the same for yourself?

I don’t actually work AT McDonald’s (not that there’s anything wrong with that, except for the pay I guess).

What I’m referring to is some recent consulting work I completed while eating breakfast at a McDonald’s down in San Diego, just before visiting one of my clients.

With the addition of free Wifi and a recent change in decor, McDonald’s almost feels like a Starbucks these days. I even heard that there’s a McDonalds (somewhere) that offers free use of a conference room. Nice!

I suppose the other reason for this post is to express my amazement over the fact that I can actually conduct business from a McDonald’s restaurant. I’m 100% freelance now (web product development, social media marketing, and video production, in case you were wondering), so I find myself travelling a bit more than I used to. But on this particular morning I found myself eating an Egg McMuffin, replying to emails, reviewing my calendar, and editing videos for one of my clients. Pretty much exactly how I conduct business in the privacy of my home office, and with almost the same efficiency (two 24″ monitors usually helps – but not always!).

Ironically, I found it easier to focus on what I was doing at McDonald’s than at any corporate office I’ve ever worked in. Sometimes it helps to get away from the office (home or otherwise) and to have fewer distractions (people or otherwise) while you’re focusing on a chunk of work.

The icing on the cake was witnessing one of the best McDonalds managers ever. She was so nice to her team, and they seemed so happy. I almost thought I was at In-N-Out.

That’s it from me. What’s your most unique work experience?

I had the unbelievable good fortune of being invited to visit the corporate offices of social media platform Ning this past week to participate in the Ning Network Council program. There were ten community managers in attendance, ranging from my little cooking community (NoTimeToCookDinner.com) to huge communities like Ellen, momlogic, and Extra, which currently has over 800,000 members.

Special thanks to my new friend Alice for this photo.

I met some of Ning’s most outstanding employees, shook hands with (and possibly insulted with a back-handed compliment) CEO Gina Bianchini, and compared notes with some amazing network creators who are just crushing it (as Gary Vaynerchuk would say) on sites like MyModernMet.com, BabySpot.com, tudiabetes.org, BroadwaySpace.com, BJPenn.com, DesignDemocracy.ws and LiveHereOakPark.com.

I was a big fan of Ning before my visit, but I can honestly say that I am 1000 times more confident in their infrastructure and commitment to making Ning the best platform for niche social networks.

As far as I can tell, here’s their special sauce (it’s pretty simple actually): Ning cares a lot about their employees. And in return, the employees care a LOT about Ning’s members. My fellow community managers and I were treated like royalty, and our feedback was intensely scrutinized. You don’t see that every day from your typical software companies.

For those who don’t know, Ning offers an amazing product offering and level of service for a ridiculously low price. You can actually create a Ning network in less than 5 minutes at absolutely zero cost. That’s right, zero. Nada. ZIP! And you could scale that network to tens of thousands of users without ever having to open your wallet.

That said, Ning does offer some “premium services” for those who want them. For example, if you want to make your network’s url something like www.BobsFishingHole.com versus http://bobsfishinghole.ning.com, that’ll set you back a whopping $5/month. Want to turn off the banner ads on the right hand side, or hide the references to the Ning Platform? Those features are $25/mo each. They’ve also got premium support for a measley $10 bucks a month, although, frankly, I’ve never needed it. Their user forums are very active, and full of seasoned and helpful community managers as well as Ning employees.

Bottom line: Ning rocks! Nothing else out there even comes close. The good news is that all of my energy can now go into community development for NoTimeToCookDinner.com and new communities for my clients who are ready to take the plunge into social media.

Thanks again to Ning, and to all of my new friends as well.

Here’s their special sauce, gang: Ning cares a lot about their employees. And in return, Ning employees care a LOT about us members. We were treated like royalty, and they listened intently to our feedback. You don’t see that every day.

I haven’t been very active in the Network Creators community before, but in the last few days I’ve seen countless NC’s beating up Ning employees about new features, performance issues, and business practices. That really bums me out.

The one thing I ask of my fellow Network Creators is that you consider softening your approach to requesting help, reporting issues, and venting your frustrations. These are real people who have your best interests at heart. I know tempers flare when people are under stress (I struggle with that every day). But even Premium Service members should stop and appreciate the amazing product offering and service that you are getting for the ridiculously low price you are paying.

Ning rocks! Nothing else out there even comes close

This was a quick test to see whether YouTube’s Annotations actually appear in videos that are embedded into other web sites.

They do.

So for anyone looking for an easy way to watermark YouTube videos without getting into video production or buying a one-off piece of software, this is probably a good solution.

Here’s a screenshot showing the annotation on the video embedded in my blog:

Using YouTube Annotations to Watermark Videos

Since Annotations are just an overlay on top of the videos (I think), web savvy individuals can probably get around this by downloading the YouTube video and uploading it to another video streaming service. And it happens all the time.

However, if you aren’t too concerned about it and you would just like to include a link to your blog or some other information (or add some “pop up humor” to your videos), YouTube Annotations can be a really fun and easy way to do it. You have some control over the size, shape, and color of the annotations, as well as the duration and some other aspects.

You can also create an annotation that links back to YouTube page (channel), where you can encourage people to subscribe to your videos. Just be careful about using arrow-shaped annotations to point to the Subscribe button, since the button won’t be present if your video is embedded on someone else’s blog or web site. Instead it might be pointing to an advertisement or other unrelated link.

Annotations are really easy to create. Once you are logged into YouTube, click on My Videos > Annotations and read the brief instructions. It might take a little bit of experimenting to find something you like, but the results could be very powerful, especially if you have a lot of “fans” showing off your videos. It even works on Facebook!

YouTube Annotations on Facebook

You can also create Captions for people with disabilities. But this post is already long enough…

As much as I love Google Apps, my MacBook Pro, and the thought of going 100% commercial open source, I’m still very loyal to Microsoft (as are many of the folks that I do work for). So it’s important that I stay current on the latest MS applications, including Windows 7.

A good friend and fellow IT consultant at Sureteq had been encouraging me to get a Microsoft TechNet subscription for quite some time… so I finally did.

For those who don’t know, a TechNet subscription allows you to download full versions of ANY Microsoft software for “evaluation” purposes. The theory is, the sooner the IT community goes out and tries this new software, the sooner they will feel comfortable rolling it out into their organizations. It’s a good model.

The subscription also comes with two Microsoft troubleshooting tickets (which more than covers the cost of the subscription) and access to forums and other valuable resources.

There are two types of subscriptions: download only and DVD. My recommendation (for newbies) is to skip the DVDs and just go with the download only option. You’ll save a couple hundred dollars by downloading and burning your own ISOs.

OK, so this post was supposed to be about Twitter, right? Well, it is. And here’s why…

In the past, I’ve always done a quick Google search for promo codes whenever I purchase something online. Sometimes you get lucky, assuming the forum you found isn’t too dated. Most of the time, you have to try quite a few codes before you finally find one that works.

Yesterday I discovered that Twitter is a great way to search for promo codes because the results are nearly REAL-TIME. That means the older stuff if filtered out. As soon as someone posts something that works, it’s almost immediately available in Twitter’s search engine.

Here you can see I searched for “technet promo code” and actually got a promo code from Microsoft TechNet France. I don’t care what language it is, those 7 magical little characters (TNWIN7L) saved me $100 bucks!

Find online discounts using Twitter's search

After Tweeting about my good fortune, a friend turned me onto this site: CouponCabin.com. It looks like a great resource, and there are many others like it.

Try searching for other discounts on Twitter and share whatever you find in the comments below. As for me, I’m off to install Windows 7…

12/1/09 update: Got $50 off an annual subscription to Lynda.com, the BEST online training resource for creative professionals.

I can’t believe all of the incredible tools available for bloggers these days. I just downloaded WordPress 2 for the iPhone, and wrote this post ON my phone.

OK, so it took waaaaaay longer to do it this way, and I know people have been doing this for a while, but it’s my first time so I’m feeling quite empowered.

I also just realized that this allows people to blog from virtually anywhere. Including places like the bathroom. Cool. I mean, gross!

But still, it’s pretty amazing considering that 10 years ago most people didn’t even have cell phones.

P.S. I later edited this post and added the screenshot using a web browser.

OK, so I realize these first couple of posts aren’t going to be the most interesting. I just need some content to start populating my WordPress database, so I can see what this particular WordPress theme looks like.

I found a nice Twitter Plugin on WordPress.org, which I installed and hooked up to my personal Twitter account (@tpinto3). Nothing really exciting happening over there either (not yet, anyway), but you have to start somewhere, right?

Now I’m looking for just the right skin. The default “themes” that came with the latest WordPress install were OK, but I’ve seen some really slick stuff out there, and not all of it is custom development. In fact, there are over 1,000 FREE WordPress skins that you can download and freely use.

Amazing! You just have to be slightly technical enough to get the files in the right place. Need help? Let me know. (Scratch that. I just discovered that you can search for and upload/install themes from within WordPress itself. Nice!)

You can also sometimes find out where someone got their theme by scrolling to the bottom of their blog and looking for the “powered by WordPress” link, along with the name of the theme that is currently applied. For example:

And if you click on either the name of the theme, or the designer’s name, you’ll typically be taken to some place where you can get the theme for next to nothing (often even free!).

Well, that’s about enough for today. I guess there were a few nuggets in there. Who knows, maybe I’ll actually keep this post.
